Martinborough is a wine village in the Wairarapa region, with a population of less than 2,000. Despite its small population and rural feel, it has become a destination of choice in the Wairarapa for wine lovers.
There are around thirty wineries in the area surrounding Martinborough, many of which have helped the region earn its reputation for Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc varieties. A wide selection of wines can be tasted throughout the year, but special vintages are reserved for tasting at the annual Toast Martinborough wine, food and music festival. Held each year in November, this one-day event attracts people from all corners of New Zealand, who come to sample delights from the vineyards and kitchens of Martinborough. Throughout the year, visitors can embark on a wine trail through Martinborough and on to Gladstone and Masterton.
One of the best things about this town is that a great number of its wineries and attractions can be explored on foot. Many visitors enjoy a wander through the town centre, savouring the experience of its lively cafes, restaurants and boutique shops. Most of the wineries in the area are within walking distance of the town square.
