Taranaki Regional Information

The Taranaki region lies on the North Island's west coast. The heart of the area is the iconic Mount Taranaki Egmont and the surrounding Egmont National Park, in which there are ski fields and more than 300 kilometres of walking and hiking tracks.

Visitors and locals alike enjoy taking advantage of the unique recreational opportunities offered by Mount Taranaki Egmont, through exhilarating climbing, skiing, tramping and photography. The National Park does have a system of tracks which are suitable for overnight treks, but if you are climbing or walking on the mountain, you should always ensure that you are well prepared and equipped for all conditions. While on the mountain, you will walk amidst vegetation ranging from sub-tropical forests to sub-alpine growth at an altitude of 1,800 metres. At its highest point, the mountain is 2,518 metres.

Adding to the region's appeal are surf beaches and public gardens filled with both native and exotic flora. Tikorangi, the Jury Garden, follows the English landscape tradition, while bringing a taste of contemporary Pacifica style to the garden. Te Kainga Marire is a native garden that mimics New Zealand's natural environment. Pukeiti is one of the country's premier rhododendron gardens, set in lush rainforest, with floral displays year round.

In New Plymouth, the region's main centre, the Govett-Brewster Gallery houses contemporary New Zealand art from some of the country's foremost art practitioners. Another cultural centre is Puke Ariki, an interactive knowledge facility that combines a public library, museum and visitor centre, and displays more than 6000 Maori taonga (treasures).
