Southland Regional Information

Southland is New Zealand's southernmost region, boasting beautiful landscapes from high mountains to ice glaciers to lush, native bush and parks.

The region offers some of the country's most diverse areas of native forest and indigenous grasslands. From the peaks of New Zealand's largest national park to the wild subantarctic islands, this dramatic landscape is home to a number of rare and endangered native bird species.

The farming, forestry and horticulture industries provide economic stability for Southland, along with business in the region's largest urban centre, Invercargill, a city with a population of 49,000. It has many attractive Victorian and Edwardian buildings, as well as a number of landscaped gardens.

Nearby, the fishing village of Bluff is the source of Bluff Oysters and the site of an annual festival showcasing Southland's seafood, fine wine and entertainment.

Gore is the Brown Trout fishing capital of Southland. The Mataura River provides some of the best fish numbers and catch rates in New Zealand.
