Balclutha Regional Information

Located near the end of the Clutha River at the midway point between Dunedin and Invercargill, Balclutha is the largest centre in southern Otago and operates as a service town for the surrounding fertile farmlands.

The town is also the gateway township to the beautiful Catlins region, where distinctive wildlife, native forest and coastline scenery attract many visitors. Curio Bay is the site of a unique fossilized forest which dates from the Jurassic period, 180 million years ago, and can be seen at low tide. The native forest in the region consists of rimu, totara, miro, matai, manuka, rata and silver beech trees. Within this large forested area, the songs of bellbirds, wood pigeons, fantails and grey warblers can be heard. Further wildlife treats are in store on the coastline, where leopard seals, elephant seals, fur seals and sealions can be encountered, along with small populations of the rare yellow-eyed penguin and Hector's dolphin.

Navigate with our great Balclutha map to stay on the right track and find what you're looking for when traveling in the region. While you're on the road, be prepared for all seasons with weather forecasts, reports and current information on Otago weather.
