Otago Regional Information

Steeped in history, Otago is located in the central South Island. There, remnants of the region's 1860's gold rush remain; miners' trails and stone cottages, mining equipment, mines and other relics can still be seen today. Another treasure found in the Otago region is Pinot Noir wine, which can be sampled at many of the area's wineries.

Dunedin is the region's largest city, a university town and a place where history is present through the city's Victorian and Edwardian architecture. As New Zealand's oldest city, Dunedin's first settlers were whalers, gold miners and migrants from Scotland and China.

The Otago Peninsula is home to rare penguins, fur seals and sea lions, as well as the world's only mainland albatross colony.

Further west, Queenstown is a popular holiday destination year-round, with majestic scenery stretching from the waters of Lake Wakatipu across to the Remarkables mountain range. Taking a step away from the hum of cosmopolitan Queenstown, the township of Wanaka attracts those who enjoy the outdoors, from mountain biking to hiking, skiing and jet boating.
