Formed in 1989 as one aspect of the reform of Local Government in New Zealand, the Rodney District covers an area of 2,475 square kilometres and takes its name from Cape Rodney at Omaha Bay.
The district lies north of North Shore City, south of the Kaipara District and east of Waitakere City. The District can be separated into three wards. The Western Ward, incorporating Helensville, Kumeu and Waimauku, is a popular area for lifestyle property as well as horticulture, forestry and viticulture. The Eastern Ward covers the Hibiscus Coast and is a retirement and holiday destination for Aucklanders. The Northern Ward contains Warkworth, Wellsford and Snells Bay, and includes lifestyle blocks, holiday homes and retirement villages.
For holiday makers, the district provides the starting point for a leisurely drive along the Twin Coat Discovery touring route. Traveling up the west coast to Cape Reinga, returning via the Bay of Islands to Auckland, the drive offers stunning coastal views. Warkworth, in the North of the district, is a boutique style township from which you can explore the Kowhai Coast and Kawau Island, the home of Sir George Gray, a colonial governor.
To the west of Rodney is Kaipara Harbour, the Southern Hemisphere's largest enclosed harbour. The harbour area was originally a base for Kauri timber milling, but now offers cruises ranging from three hour jaunts to three day expeditions.
