Lake Taupo, the jewel of this region, is set against the backdrop of a dramatic volcanic landscape with three volcanoes Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe dominating the skyline. The lake itself was created by a violent volcanic eruption in 181AD, sending ash flying as far as Europe and China.
The region's inhabitants live close to the lake's shores and make their living through tourism, including snow sports in the winter months, and forestry. To visitors and locals, the lake and its tributaries offer year-round fishing for Rainbow and Brown Trout, which were released in Lake Taupo more than 100 years ago.
Lake Ruapehu is one of the largest active volcanoes in New Zealand and is included in the territory of the Tongariro National Park. Its slopes are popular with snow-lovers, who ski at Whakapapa and Turoa ski fields. Weather conditions on the mountain can change very quickly and visitors are advised to check mountain forecasts, wear suitable clothing and carry basic survival equipment.
