Rangiora is the largest town in North Canterbury, situated 25 kilometres north of Christchurch.
The centre first developed as a market town during the 1860's, growing crops in the area's fertile farmland and supplying fresh produce to the city of Christchurch. The timber in surrounding forests was also sought after for fuel and construction. For nearly 1,000 years before this, Maori had occupied the land and utilized its natural resources. Maori established permanent settlements at Kaiapoi to the east and Tuahiwi to the west. The local Ngai Tahu tribe strongly opposed the acquisition of the area by Europeans in the 1840's.
Today, Rangiora combines city amenities with the quiet lifestyle of a semi-rural town, and retains a strong sense of community. Recreational facilities in the town include an 18-hole golf course, heated swimming pool, the Rangiora Raceway and an international standard BMX track. There are also walkways through native bush within a short distance of the town, along with wineries in the Waipara Valley, 20 minutes north of Rangiora.
The town's heritage is visible through a number of historical buildings. Of particular interest is St John's Church, the largest and oldest wooden church in Canterbury. The timber for the church's construction was felled in the nearby bush and the church was opened in 1860, with Archdeacon Benjamin Woolley Dudley at its helm. The Northbrook Colonial Museum houses a collection of artefacts which offer a glimpse into the life of pioneers in New Zealand.
