Rakaia Regional Information

Rakaia is a rural community on the Canterbury Plains, located 50 kilometres south of Christchurch on the southern banks of the Rakaia River.

The economy in the region relies on the fertility of its alluvial soil, which is washed or blown down from the Canterbury Plains. Horticulture and arable farming are ideally suited to conditions in the area, along with sheep, deer and dairy farming.

The small town has earned its name as the Salmon Capital of New Zealand, with large populations of both salmon and trout in the Rakaia River. The fishing season stretches from October through until April, peaking in the months of February and March. During this time, anglers line the 20 kilometres closest to the mouth of the river. The annual Rakaia Salmon Fishing Competition puts the skills of local and visiting fishermen to the test. As well as fishing, the river provides opportunities for rafting, jet boating and kayaking.
