General Wairarapa Weather Information
Just over an hour from our capital city, Wellington, the Wairarapa region is a popular escape for Wellingtonians. The sheltered Wairarapa Valley and mild climate is ideal for the planting of vineyards, orchards and olive groves, the fruits of which can be enjoyed at cafes and vineyard restaurants in Masterton, Martinborough and throughout the region. During summer months, pleasant Wairarapa weather make the region's rivers, mountains and coastal areas a great recreational destination for hiking, swimming, surfing and horse trekking, or for the more adventurous, abseiling, jet boating and mountain biking.
Masterton is the Wairarapa's largest town, a rural service centre with added extras, such as the annual International Golden Shears sheep shearing competition and the New Zealand Shear Discovery Centre. The town is also home to a thriving community of artists and craftspeople, whose work can be viewed in their studios and in Aratoi, the Wairarapa museum of art and history. Masterton weather is sunny in warmer months, with cool winters.
