General Waikato Weather Information
A region best known for the lush green of its hills, pastures and farmlands, the Waikato offers a range of unique natural attractions. See waterfalls, hot mineral pools, wild surf beaches and the area's most famous underground attraction, the Waitomo Caves. Derived from the Maori words 'Wai,' meaning 'water' and 'tomo' meaning 'hole,' Waitomo gives you the chance to enter a magical environment and view ancient limestone features that have taken 30 million years to form. Take a guided tour: walking, blackwater rafting, caving or abseiling. Exposed to prevailing west and southwest winds from the Tasman Sea, Waikato weather is generally mild and humid. Inland areas experience greater extremes of hot and cold.
Hamilton is Waikato's main centre and New Zealand's seventh largest city, with a rapidly growing urban culture and many things to see and do. Visit the zoo, watch a game at the local stadium or soak up some culture at Hamilton theatres and art galleries. Hamilton weather is sunny and humid in spring, and hot and dry in summer.
Te Kuiti is the shearing capital of New Zealand, and the world, hosting the annual New Zealand National Shearing Championships. The Waitomo Caves, northwest of the town, are one of the country's most visited attractions. Te Kuiti weather is humid in summer and mild in winter.
Tokoroa is the Waikato region's second largest centre, situated at the crossroads between dairy farmland and forestry plantations. The timber and dairy farming industries are vital to the town's economy. Tokoroa weather shares the region's tendency towards humid summers and mild winter months.
