General Southland Weather Information

A diverse region, Southland encompasses rainforest, farmland and coastal environments. The region's geography is mirrored in a varied, but generally cool climate. At any time of the year, Southland is ideal for those wanting to explore unspoilt New Zealand wilderness, see native wildlife and appreciate spectacular scenery. Southland weather is pleasant and temperate during the summer, with the nights often bringing ground frosts to the area during the winter months.

Gore is Southland's second largest town, well-loved by anglers as the brown trout capital of the world and famed as the home of country music in New Zealand. Gore weather brings cool temperatures year round and cold winters, but this doesn't stop anglers from around the world coming to the Mataura River and its tributaries to fish for elusive brown trout. Gore hosts the New Zealand Gold Guitar Awards, a country music festival showcasing the talents of local, national and international performers.

Invercargill is New Zealand's southernmost city and Southland's main centre. With a strong Scottish heritage and beautiful parks and gardens, Invercargill welcomes visitors with genuine southern hospitality. The city's port, at Bluff, is a leading export point and famous nationwide for its succulent oysters, celebrated annually at the Bluff Oyster Festival. Invercargill weather is cool, yet temperate, with sunny days and low yearly rainfall.
