General Otago Weather Information

Combining spectacular natural forms - mountain landscapes, wide open areas, rivers, lakes and beaches - with gold mining heritage, Otago is a unique destination. To the west are snow covered mountains, forests and the southern lakes. Otago weather brings hot summers and cold winters, providing the perfect climate for holiday adventures in any season. In summer, walk or bike the Otago Rail Trail or sample the region's divine stone fruits. In winter, head for the region's mountains and ski slopes.

Alexandra was founded during the prosperous gold mining days and is today famous as an idyllic, sunny holiday spot. With high sunshine hours and low rainfall, Alexandra weather makes this region a successful wine making area and home of the annual Blossom Festival, which draws thousands of people to the town each year.

Dunedin is Otago's largest city, with a proud Scottish heritage and New Zealand's oldest university, founded in 1869. Well known for cold winters and sharp frosts, Dunedin weather makes up for its chilly reputation with the city's warm hospitality and a vibrant atmosphere. Take in the city's Victorian and Edwardian architecture, the world's steepest street and a lively student scene. Beyond the city, the Catlins Coast and Otago Peninsula offer encounters with penguins, gannets, albatross and sea lions in their natural habitat.

Oamaru is an historic town, built on the shores of Friendly Bay during goldrush days. Oamaru is known for its historic buildings, created in an Italianate style from locally quarried creamy-white stone. Visitors are drawn to Oamaru for its coastal experiences, including spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, secluded swimming and surf beaches, and native wildlife, including yellow-eyed penguins, little blue penguins and fur seals. Oamaru weather is continental, with few extremes in weather conditions.

Queenstown is an isolated, yet buzzing, resort town. With majestic views of surrounding mountain ranges and Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown is popular with both Kiwis and international visitors. There are a myriad of activities on offer year round, including adventure favourites for which the town is famous: bungy jumping, skiing, jet boating and canyoning. Queenstown weather is warm in summer and sunny, yet frosty, in winter.

Wanaka is a fresh, friendly picturesque town, set at the edge of Lake Wanaka and Mount Aspiring National Park. Wanaka weather brings four distinct seasons to the area; there are many attractions and activities to appeal at any time of the year. Take your pick from one of three nearby ski resorts, fish for trout in lakes and rivers around Wanaka, hike in inspiring surroundings or taste wines from some of the country's finest vineyards.
