Situated on the central East Coast of the South Island, Timaru is South Canterbury's largest city and port. The city enjoys a mild climate that is ideal for growing a variety of produce, ranging from apples to berry fruits, asparagus and pumpkins, as well as flowers such as calla lilies and peony roses. Lying to the east of the Southern Alps, Timaru has low annual rainfall, mild summers and cold, frosty winters.
