General Canterbury Weather Information

New Zealand's largest region by land area, Canterbury covers the area from Hanmer Springs in the north to Twizel in the south, and Mount Cook and Arthur's Pass in the west to Christchurch, Kaikoura and Timaru on the east coast. Generally, Canterbury weather brings warm summers and cold winters. Summer provides opportunities for hiking, mountaineering, whalewatching and other outdoor activities, while winter offers access to nine ski areas and the magical experience of winter in the Hanmer Springs alpine village.

Ashburton is the mid-Canterbury farming district's main centre, giving you access to the South Island's awe-inspiring scenery: majestic mountains, the patchwork of the Canterbury Plains and the clear, crisp waters of local rivers. Sample this scenic beauty from the air with a hot air balloon experience, a guided fishing trip, a hike or a mountain biking excursion. Ashburton weather is hot and dry in summer months, and sunny yet cool in winter.

Christchurch, the region's largest centre, is an ideal base from which to explore the region in any season. With parks, heritage buildings and tree-lined Avon River, the 'Garden City' is widely known as the most English of all New Zealand cities. Christchurch weather is temperate and dry, with warm summers and frosty winters. The city offers something for every season: daffodils and blossoms in Hagley Park during the spring; the vibrant SummerTimes festival during the summer; walks and hikes in the autumn; and snow sports in the winter.

Kaikoura is most famous for its whale watching and dolphin swimming encounters. Memorable tours by boat or plane will get you up close to these friendly mammals and other wildlife, and are available at any time of the year. Set between the ocean and the Kaikoura Ranges, this once sleepy seaside village is now a thriving coastal destination year round. A pleasant maritime climate ensures Kaikoura weather is mild and sunny.

Timaru is a busy coastal town characterised by Victorian and Edwardian architecture, beautiful gardens and the town's focal point, Caroline Bay. Timaru weather is mild in summer, when visitors and locals enjoy the Timaru Botanic Gardens, which are well-loved for their impressive rose collection. Adventure activities are also popular during summer months, with mountain biking, golf, fishing and horse riding all on offer. During colder months, snow sports enthusiasts can choose from four ski fields, offering heli-skiing or glacier skiing for a snow outing with a difference.
