Showers clearing overnight, then fine. Showers return late tomorrow.

Auckland to Kapiti, Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty and the central plateau
Remaining showers becoming confined to south of Taupo today, and clearing elsewhere. Snow above 700 metres in Taihape affecting the Desert Road. Becoming fine throughout tomorrow.

Gisborne to Wairarapa
Showers. Longer fine spells for Gisborne and inland Hawkes Bay. Southwest gales spreading along the coasts today, easing tomorrow.

Wellington, Marlborough, Canterbury
Rain, easing to showers tomorrow. Snow gradually lowering to 600 metres in Wellington and Marlborough, and to 400 metres in Canterbury. Southerly gales in exposed places, with gusts to 120 km/h in exposed parts of Wellington, easing tomorrow.

Nelson, Buller to Fiordland
Mostly fine.

Otago, Southland
Showers linger in the east and south, but only isolated falls in western areas clearing tomorrow. Snow above 500 metres.

Chatham Islands
Showers.

For Saturday
A very strong easterly flow is expected to develop over the North Island as a deep low moves towards Northland. Rain is expected to spread over the whole island with heavy falls in the north and east. Easterly gales are expected in many places, with severe gales possible for Northland, Coromandel and Auckland. Cold southerlies bring further rain or showers to the south and east of the South Island. Mainly fine for Nelson and the West Coast.

For Sunday
Rain or showers over the North Island, with heavy falls at first in Gisborne and Hawkes Bay. Strong south or southwest winds. Cold southerlies in the south and east of the South Island with further rain or showers. Some light rain for Nelson, but remaining dry on the west coast.

Monday
Showers clearing from North Island areas. However rain developing again in Northland late in the day. Becoming fine in Nelson and Marlborough. Mostly cloudy further south with some light rain or drizzle.

Chatham Islands
Showers on Saturday with northeasterlies. Rain on Sunday with easterlies rising to gale. Showers on Monday with strong or gale southeasterlies.
